Shiatsu:
This massage technique is of Japanese descent, which is based on the ideas of acupuncture. The literal definition is to “press with fingers,” along channels associated with different organs, each of which has an element that goes with it. This modality is best for those who are looking to keep their clothes on and want a more energetic healing. Shiatsu, along with a traditional diagnosis, can complement or take the place of an acupuncture treatment. It is frequently thought of as ‘Acu-pressure’. After a treatment the client will feel much more relaxed and harmonized with their body. It is done without disrobing, thus no need for oils, lotions or other lubricants.

A western approach, that uses long strokes toward the heart, friction motions, vibration, tapotement, effleurage, and petrissage. It promotes blood flow and immunity, increases relaxation and provides better sleep. This technique:

Chinese Gua Sha tools are meant for stroking and scraping the skin, which raises small dots under the skin called petechiae. It is used to treat chronic pain, promotes healing through blood flow, and creates a “lifting” feeling. Only enough pressure is used that the client is comfortable with.
-
Cupping tools: I use plastic suction cups. As the air inside the cup is suctioned up in a vacuum, the skin rises and blood vessels expand. The cups are not meant to be left in place longer than 2-3 minutes. This tool helps with inflammation, pain, well-being, and blood flow. It is a form of deep tissue massage.

Hot Stones: Smooth flat stones are heated and placed on specific parts of the body to help promote the relaxation of tense muscles and healing of damaged soft tissue.
