Let's start off with what J plasma is; "a non-invasive surgical device (rod shaped) that can manipulate tissues precisely and without causing extensive damage to surrounding areas" [1]. (Video of J Plasma device). For people that may have lots of skin left over after there liposuciton treatment, this could be a really good option for tightening the skin back up and leave less "flaps".
I recently worked with a client who had J Plasma done after a liposuction treatment, who was experiencing extra sensitivity around the areas she got treated with J Plasma. One cause for this is that the nerves around the treated areas get shocked and disoriented. This can cause extra tenderness when touched or increased sensitivity to temperature. It can cause feelings of "burning, sharp tearing, ripping, jolting, and electricity,"[3]. These feelings are very normal and a part of the process of the nerves healing. The best way to treat it is through physical manipulation, or touch.
During a massage session, it is best for the practitioner to provide many different sensations to the affected areas to stimulate responses to the brain and create a more normalized feeling for the body in the space that it occupies. Good examples of strokes to use in a massage would be vibration, deep along with light pressure, brushing, scraping, heat and if possible a little bit of cold. Followed with gentle "J" strokes to push the lymph towards the main draining nodes. Located in the neck, armpit, and inguinal areas. It is good to mix the session with Swedish techiques to stimulate the nerves and opening of the muscles, and then follow with light lymph strokes to move the excess lymph to the closest nodes they can drain from.
The client I worked on had two Jackson-Pratt (JP) drains, "used after a surgery to drain fluids away from the wound; looks like a tube with bulbs attached," [2]. The first two sessions they were about half way full when she came in and would then be about 3/4ths full by the end of the session. After about a week she had very little fluid left, maybe a sixth of the bulb, and still noticed twice the amount of fluid being released after the massage session.
In conclusion, feelings of burning numbness or lumpy areas around the would is to be expected after a J plasma and lipo treatment. It varies to different extents with each person, and the nerves/swelling get better in time the more stimulus they receive. Keep in mind that it is not magic and the body cannot fix itself with a session every day. I recommend beginning with a session 2-3 days after the initial visit, then 4-5 days and finally 7-9 days. Then go in for a massage as needed or once every four to six months.
